What's Happening at Sherman Elementary School?

Look for continued and new enrichment programming at Sherman - thanks to the leadership of Principal Matsuno.

Here's what we currently offer...

Arts

Drawing and Painting Classes - Marisa Cunz is teaching drawing and painting classes weekly to students at all grade levels. Funded by the PTA.

Choral Music Classes - Ms. Carolyn and Ms. Shenee visits us every Tuesday and to teach chorus at all grade levels, complementing our band and orchestra teacher, who comes on Wednesdays.

Outdoor Learning

Our Garden is Growing - The Green School Yard Committee along with our community has transformed our Franklin Street yard into a learning garden and tranquil parkland. [More]

Garden Coordinator - Sherman has a wonderful garden coordinator who works with all of our classes.  They've composted, grown lettuce, raised and released butterflies and had fun in the dirt!

Sports 4 Kids - Coach Michelle works with each class every other week for focused physical education.  She also works with the students at recess and after-school with the assistance of our Junior Coaches - our upper grade students who help lead physical activities and games on the schoolyard.  Intramural sports for upper grade classes and a Power Walking/Running Club for all students is also offered.

Reading is Fundamental!

Reading Recovery Teacher - our wonderful Reading Recovery teacher works one-on-one and in small groups primarily with first graders to support their literacy development.  She also supports students in upper grades as needed.

Upgrades to our beautiful library - Sherman received a $10,000 grant to fully computerize our card catalogue and enable students to do research via computer. Special thanks to the diligent efforts of our Clare Watsky, our librarian, for making this happen.

Technology

Mind Institute - Computer learning in a non-language based forum helps our upper grade students increase their math skills.

Technology Lab - Mrs. Lujan works with all of our students weekly in the technology lab to educate and familiarize them with computers and computer learning.

Other Support

Sandtray Education - Mary Watson and volunteer therapists work with chosen students using this unique therapy.
